Reintroduction of the Przewalski’s Horse Project Continues Successfully
Ambassador B.Bolormaa met with Ms. Lenka Poliaková, Director of Prague Zoo, on 15 June 2026 to exchange views on projects being implemented under Mongolia-Czech cooperation aimed at protecting endangered wildlife species and increasing their populations through conservation and breeding efforts.
During the meeting, Ambassador B. Bolormaa emphasized that one of the most significant and successful projects in Mongolia-Czech relations and cooperation is the Przewalski’s horse reintroduction initiative, launched and implemented by Prague Zoo to return the species to its native habitat in Mongolia.
She also informed the Director that a Presidential Decree has been issued to place the Przewalski’s horse reintroduction project, to be implemented in Sumiin Khooloi of the Nomrog National Park in Dornod Aimag, under the patronage of the President of Mongolia. She noted that this decision will play an important role in ensuring the project's long-term sustainability and further expanding environmental cooperation between Mongolia and the Czech Republic.
Director L. Poliaková briefed the Ambassador on her working visit to Mongolia in May 2026, including meetings held with relevant organizations and local representatives. She also shared information on future plans for the reintroduction of Przewalski’s horses and the conservation of the wild Bactrian camel, as well as challenges that need to be addressed. Following the meeting, she gave the Ambassador a tour of the Przewalski’s horse section of the zoo.
Since 2011, Prague Zoo has been implementing a project to reintroduce the Przewalski’s horse, the last remaining species of truly wild horse, to its native habitat in Mongolia. To date, the zoo has transported a total of 34 horses to Mongolia, and this year marks the 15th anniversary of the project. Today, approximately 800 Przewalski’s horses live in the wild in Mongolia, representing a tangible success of international cooperation and, in particular, the reintroduction program carried out in partnership with Prague Zoo.
To commemorate World Horse Day and Mongolia’s National Naadam Festival, Prague Zoo, together with the Czech-Mongolian Friendship and Cooperation Society NGO, will organize a Mongolian Cultural Day on 11 July 2026. We warmly invite all members of the public to participate in this event.
